New research has revealed that sports injuries, including pulled muscles and joint problems, cost British employers as much as £9 billion a year.
One of the most common causes seems to be people doing keep-fit DVDs in their living room at the weekend without warming up and cooling down properly, leading many to phone in sick on a Monday morning.
The poll, which was carried out for Goldshield joint supplement Lubramine, questioned 2,500 people and found that 60 per cent had overdone their home workouts on a weekend.
Rheumatologist and joint health expert Dr Taher Mahmud commented: "Exercise has many health benefits, but people need to remember if they are not used to exercising, over exertion can put additional strain on their ligaments and joints resulting in injury and time off work."
Dr Tahmud advised: "Warming up before exercise and cooling down afterwards is vital to help prevent injury."
Consumers should also ensure they wear the correct clothing for exercise, including trainers that provide the necessary support for the ankles, knees, hips and back, and may want to consider taking joint supplements.
